Victorian High Art as a Mower
<
There was something beautiful in the designs of late 19th century machines and farm equipment. Cast iron and steel was formed into pre-modernist designs that were often as much art as functional machines. The Eureka Mower with its unique design fits the bill as a machine that embodies the values of form and function.
The center draft sickle was a design not often seen among mowers. These machines were manufactured by the Eureka Mower Co. in Utica N.Y. from the early 1870's until well into the 1880's. The parts manual above is probably quite rare and the half burned original is very brittle. I hope to rescan it, repair the blemishes and post it for everyone to view. This could very well be the last one of these interesting manuals. I really wonder if a restored or unrestored model of this interesting mower itself still exists?
