Norway: Civilized Hikers Paradise

Summer Light is a book for the armchair vicarious traveler, or someone actively planning to hike in Norway. I hope to trace some of the steps taken by the author at some point in the future. Norway is a country designed for the outdoor hiking enthusiast. Imagine Glacier National Park without grizzlies. Instead of sleeping in fear in wet tents, you will find there are warm cabins and hot food along the trail. This might not appeal to the hardcore outdoors person bent on struggle and “pure” nature. To an aging been there/done that woodsman like myself, the juxtaposition of wilderness and semi-civilization sounds like a great idea.
The author is a veteran of hiking in the mountains of Norway. The book reads as an enjoyable travelogue and overview of Norway. Throughout, the author interjects his personal reflections and life experiences to a degree that make me want to find another book by him. He has written several other mountain hike-alogs from places such as New Zealand and Nepal. Lonely Planet publishes travel literature and guides that are “off the beaten track”. They often illustrate a different angle on a place than many of the “standard” travel guides don’t do. For this reason, whenever I travel somewhere, I check out Lonely Planet.
